Elbow 101


Elbow are an English alternative rock band. Members of the band first played together in 1990 at The Corner Pin pub in Ramsbottom, Bury, a borough of Greater Manchester. The band currently retain their original line-up of lead vocalist and lyricist Guy Garvey, guitarist Mark Potter, keyboardist Craig Potter, bassist Pete Turner and drummer Richard Jupp.

Elbow 101


Acclaimed for their innovative sound and front-man Guy Garvey's evocative candid lyrics, Elbow have received vast critical acclaim and been endorsed by major artists Radiohead, Coldplay, Blur, R.E.M. and U2 despite minor commercial success during much of their career, winning the 2008 Mercury Music Prize for their fourth album, The Seldom Seen Kid.

Guy Garvey


Guy Garvey (born 6 March 1974, in Bury, Lancashire, England), is the lead inger to Elbow, as well as a presenter for BBC 6 Music and A&R manager of Skinny Dog Records. He previously presented a show on Sunday evenings on XFM. His versatile vocal range characterized by a deeply accented and thick tenor has often been compared to Peter Gabriel.

Peter Turner


Peter Turner (born 28 August 1974) is the bass player of Elbow. He is the co-author of all their songs. He notably plays a 1970 Gibson Les Paul Signature Bass. His disinctive bass is the driving force of songs like Mexican Standoff and Leaders Of The Free World from the album of the same name.

Mark and Craig Potter



Mark Potter is the lead guitarist and backing vocalist of Elbow. He is also the brother of Elbow keyboardist Craig Potter,the keyboardist from Elbow. Craig is also known for his backing vocals and production skills, having produced the band's 2008 album, "The Seldom Seen Kid", starting at number five on the UK Albums Chart and won the Mercury Prize in 2008. Over the band's 12-year career they have released four studio albums. The band is named after a line in the BBC TV mini-series The Singing Detective; a character says that the word "elbow" is the most sensuous word in the English language for how it feels to say it.

Richard Jupp


Richard Jupp is the drummer in Elbow. His drumming style is characterised by infectious grooves and innovative cymbal play. Jupp is right-handed and right footed, he also plays Zildjian cymbals. On 26th February 2006, Jupp, joined by Elbow front man Guy Garvey, performed the Elbow track ‘Grace Under Pressure’ alongside more than 100 children from across Manchester as part of the On Top of the World music-making programme.
